Validation
A validation study of Stem Mapper's diameter measurements against diameter tape, with the fitted circle, the functional DBH and the tape-equivalent compared across species and stem forms, is in preparation. Every measurement the app makes carries the share of the circle seen, the fit error and the share of the bark outline traced, so the study can state how fit quality relates to error. The paper will be listed here on publication, with its data.
Methods the app relies on
- Projected leaf area from sapwood area, coast redwood
- Stancioiu, P. T. and O'Hara, K. L. (2005). Sapwood area โ leaf area relationships for coast redwood. Canadian Journal of Forest Research 35: 1250โ1255. Used on the stem sheet when bark and sapwood thickness are entered for an increment core.
- Stem mapping from handheld LiDAR
- Work on mapping stems from phone and tablet LiDAR point clouds, including the plane-at-breast-height approach, informed the circle fit and the outline trace. References will be added with the validation paper.
Citing the app
Until the validation paper is published, cite the app by name, version and this site: Stem Mapper (version), Sequoia Geospatial, stemmapper.com. The version is shown on the app's home screen.
